Brush Lakes and Electric Peak

Jul 8, 2016

We’ve always insisted that some of the easiest peaks can present the biggest challenges. We had twice failed to reach the grassy summit of Electric Peak, 13,598 ft. in the Northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Dry Lakes and Horn Peak

Dry Lakes and Horn Peak

Camp at the first Dry Lake. Continuing with our exploration of the peaks and valleys of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, we headed up to another new area, Dry Lakes and Horn Peak, 13,450 ft. (more…)

On the descent from Spread Eagle Peak, looking south towards the heart of the Sangre de Cristos We left town for the holiday weekend and made our way down to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains for a little backpacking and peakbagging. The destination was a place known as Lake of the Clouds, and the goal was to climb two nearby 13ers, Cloud Peak and Spread Eagle Peak. (more…)

A 13er Roadtrip

A 13er Roadtrip

May 29, 2014

The view from the summit of Mount Adams. Click for enlarged view. As far as Colorado ski mountaineering is concerned, I’ve always considered the 3rd week in May to be my favorite stretch of time. The random weather that tends to sweep through the state earlier in the season usually gives way to a dry and sunny summer pattern. That in turn allows for cold clear nights and a reliable...

“Huerfano” Peak – 13,828 ft.

May 23, 2014

Technincally speaking, the mountain’s official name is Unnamed 13828. Lying directly north of the 14er Mount Lindsey, and at the head of Huerfano Creek, some refer to this Sangre de Cristo summit as Huerfano Peak.

Mount Adams – 13,931 ft.

May 22, 2014

Mount Adams rises above the town of Crestone, in a region of the Sangre de Cristos that contain some of the most impressive mountains in the state. Many climbers and peak baggers are familiar with the local 14ers— the Crestones and Kit Carson— but if you’re heading to the area with skiing in mind, Mount Adams should be at the top of your list.

Spring

Spring

Apr 13, 2014

Sean, up at Ashcroft. Spring has arrived. The ski areas are calling it a season, the snow has been melting around town, and the backcountry conditions are shaping up at the higher elevations. Aspen had an above average year in terms of snowfall but we saw three dust events, one of which was pretty significant. How that will affect our spring ski season remains to be seen, but it won’t...

On Eureka’s summit, 13,507 ft., looking down to Eureka and Hermit lakes and the Wet Mountain Valley. Continuing with our exploration of the Northern Sangre de Cristos, we backpacked up San Isabel Creek and climbed Eureka Mountain last weekend. Two years ago, Christy and I looked down on San Isabel Lake from the summit of Hermit Peak to the north, and knew we would have to camp there some day...

Rain Delay

Rain Delay

Aug 3, 2013

We tried to stay optimistic, but in the end the weather ruled the day. It’s that time of summer, when the “monsoonal flow” brings regular wet weather to the state. The forecast for last weekend looked less than ideal for any sort of outdoor adventure, but we had made plans to go on a backpacking mission, so we headed out anyway. It’s hard knowing not going, right? The goal was...

Sometimes timing is everything… as we topped out Sometimes timing is everything… as we topped out on Tarija Peak 🏔️ we knew instantly how special it was to be there at that fleeting moment in time— as the sun crested the horizon 🌄with the low clouds over the Amazon rainforest to the east, and our summit objective, Pequeno Alpamayo framing the background. Any earlier or later, and it could have been missed.

It wasn’t our plan to be at that spot at that moment, it just worked out that way. Happy to see our friends at @stio thought it was worthy of a two-page spread in their recent “Deep Winter 2025” catalog! 🙏😁

What a journey - over a lot of years! One thing re What a journey - over a lot of years! One thing remains consistent @tedmahon and #alwaysgo 🏃‍♀️❤️🙏 Back in the day, we had no idea what the Six Star Medal even was, but Chicago, Boston, NYC, Berlin, (and others) - seemed like cool places and courses to check out. Then throw in the discovery of trail running and ultramarathons, and it would take a little while to get back to New York again, London, and Tokyo. Feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience all six World Marathon Majors with so many friends and family along the way 💞So much support, laughter, challenges, and inspiration 🙏 And just what I needed right now, people from all over the world 🌍 coming together for one goal and to do their best, showing kindness, encouragement, and resilience at every step. 🙏🏃‍♀️⭐️✔️❤️ #SixStars #goals #WorldMarathonMajors #Grateful #runningcommunity @wmmajors #tokyo #London #NYC #Berlin #chicago #Boston #20thmarathon #25yearsinthemaking

We were able to summit Mount Yotei, Iwaonupuri (NE Couloir), Shirebetsu, Weisshorn, and Shirakaba-yama. Some with blue skies and incredible views, some with amazing soft powder. Most were followed by traditional onsen experiences off the beaten path, and a nightly adventure sampling the local food in Kutchan. Managed a couple fun on piste days as well.
