After an unusually long stretch of high pressure, it finally snowed. And with the arrival of the storm that broke the six-week sunny pattern, Christy, Joey, and I headed up to a favorite spot by Ashcroft on Saturday and found the skiing to be really good.
The four-day snow cycle dropped twenty inches on the ski areas when it was all over. And just like that, it was winter again.
On the way up the valley we spotted the bighorns in the usual spot high on the ridge.
This was the second of four days of snow over the weekend, and we found ourselves waiting for some visibility before skiing.
When the clouds lifted, it was time to ski.
Christy’s turn. We had about two inches on our deck at home, clearly Ashcroft got more than that.
Stacking turns.
Joey often takes a more straight line.
Then the low-vis returned.
We headed across the valley for our second run, on more north facing slopes.
Our first backcountry ski tour after a big storm cycle
After you leave Lindley Hut you skin through some willows in the base of Cooper Creek. Eventually you'll climb up on the south side of Cooper Creek and get out of the streambed. When you get higher you'll rejoin the creek and then it's easier travel to Mace Saddle.
We met in Aspen in 2000 and have been happily stuck in the rockies ever since, getting out in the mountains every day we can, in every season and by all means possible. Read More
