Some of the group make their way down the broad East Ridge. The text from my younger sister wished me a happy birthday and went on to say, “Hope you are doing something fun-and I don’t mean running 100 miles or climbing a mt…hope u have a great day…” I guess we just disagree on what constitutes birthday fun. I was really excited for our plans later that afternoon– to...
I thought I’d pass along a little video that recently hit the Internet about Seb Chaignieu’s winning Hardrock 100. I don’t usually re-post content created by others, but this race is a tough subject to accurately capture, and I think this video does a pretty good job.
At the finish, enjoying one of the simple pleasures I long for while out on the course– a seat. This year’s Hardrock 100 went well by nearly every measure. At the risk of making it sound routine, it was a fairly smooth day out there. And with the help of my crew/pacer team of Christy and Jesse Rickert– from the Mount Everest/Global Extremes days— I finished in 5th place, with...
We’ll see how this goes. Gone are the days when I could quietly sneak into the top-ten under the cover of night, when the crews of the front runners would continually ask Christy and Tim,”Who’s your runner?” as they all moved along the far reaches of the course crewing together. (more…)
We ran into, or rather were passed by, Linden Mallory and Ben Koons on Buckskin Pass. We had a great run on the Four Pass Loop last Thursday, an ideal escape from the madness of Aspen on the 4th of July. The trails are dry and the flowers were setting up to be in full bloom soon. (more…)
A look back on the course towards the Papoose fire, near Rio Grande Reservoir, somewhere around mile 35. The San Juan Solstice 50 mile run was last weekend. It’s always been a favorite race of ours, and this year was made even better when both Christy and I managed to finish in our best times to date. (more…)
Christy and I went to Twin Lakes to run Mount Elbert last weekend, a favorite outing of ours and a pretty novel running experience considering it’s the tallest mountain in the state.
The usual trail races are coming up (Lake City, Hardrock) so Christy and I are trying to make the annual rapid transition from skiing to running. It always feels kind of last minute– a recent sprained ankle didn’t help– but while I often complain to myself about the lack of time to get properly prepared, I know deep down I really like it this way. That said, it can be...
Front runners at he start of the Dirty 30. Colleen and I started a bit further back. [Christy here] With pretty incredible spring snow conditions continuing in Colorado, it has actually been hard to wrap up the skiing. However, this past weekend we finally started to transition into summer, splitting our weekend 50 – 50 between running and the Centennials project. (more…)
Through some of the narrows on the descent from the East Rim to Weeping Rock. We ran the Zion Traverse last week– a linkup of existing trails across Zion National Park that measures about 48 miles and reportedly gains around 10,000 vertical feet. Christy and I are big fans of established courses such as the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim (or roundtrip) and the Four Pass Loop, so it was time to...
