Lindley Hut, Christmas Eve.
At the start of every new season we like to set some goals, and we’ll lay out a checklist of outings and activities we hope to complete. The goals aren’t always written down and we might not always get to every one, but we try. Highland Bowl days, backcountry days, ski mountaineering days, rando races, ice climbing, the family ski trip, of course lift-accessed days (100?)— they’re all part of the winter season’s to-do list. And one of the most important checkboxes to be marked is the hut trip.
By that last measure we’re having a really good season so far, we’ve been on a few trips already and we’re only into late December. I thought I’d share some photos from three recent outings, to Fritz Benedict, Friends and the Lindley huts.
Fritz Benedict Hut was the destination for Thanksgiving. Nine of us hauled our contributions to Thanksgiving dinner up to the Hut that holds ten. It was a really cool way to spend the special night, and one that we’d recommend to anyone looking to change up the holiday and do something different.
The signature drink was the Mountain Manhattan, a spin off of a regular Manhattan (bourbon, maple syrup, dark beer and garnished with a chocolate covered cherry), and in a very big cup/soup bowl.
The dinner– at least as fancy as some back in town, but in a much more special location. That’s Andy wearing the turkey hat.
Next up was Friends Hut, where I joined Pete Gaston and Max Taam, we followed the Pearl Pass route on the way over. Allen Hadley from Crested Butte met us over there.
We reached Pearl Pass at dusk, just time enough to reach the hut before dark.
It’s a cozy one with a lot of history.
The requisite slushy.
The next morning we made our way up to Star Pass, pictured here, the same pass we cross in the night during the Grand Traverse.
Max, Pete, and Allen above Star Pass.
Sussing out the ski lines home, which took us over Star Pass, towards Opa’s Hut, and down Express Creek.
Time to ski.
Not bad for early December.
Pushing home towards Taylor Pass.
And then it was time for Lindley Hut on Christmas Eve, an annual tradition we’ve had for several years now.
Sean came up in the morning and setup a coffee pourover station that would make a San Francisco barista jealous.
Time for a little tour up towards Taylor Peak.
It was a White Christmas.
Happy New Year!!
