The Long Day

The Long Day

Sep 12, 2011

Christy descends to Copper Lake from East Maroon Pass, through flurrying snow and graupel. Forty-one miles, 9,600 feet of gain, with a high point of 12,900 feet over three passes and four valleys– that counts as a pretty long day in my book. Our friend Tim always tells Christy and I we’re “masters of the long day.” I guess in a relative sense experience does lend itself to smooth adventures,...

The Aspen Backcountry Marathon

The Aspen Backcountry Marathon

Aug 31, 2011

The inaugural Aspen Backcountry Marathon was this past Saturday. Christy and I both took part in the fledgling event that saw 240 starters, a majority of which seemed to be from out of town, an impressive number considering it’s first year status. Kudos to Aspen’s Special Events Department for getting this one off the ground. Permit issues and liability concerns can make it nearly impossible to start new events these...

Four Pass Loop

Four Pass Loop

Aug 1, 2011

Christy, on the final descent from Buckskin Pass. On Saturday, Christy and I got out on our favorite local linkup of trails and passes, the Four Pass Loop. According to some friends who had been out there earlier in the summer, the lingering snow and high water levels, the theme of summer thus far, had made the trip pretty challenging. But it seems that summer’s persistence has finally won over...

Still smiling. Click to enlarge. Go Christy. It’s your birthday. Actually, if you know Christy it’s more like a birth-week, or even month-long celebration, a notion confirmed by the candles that came with the dessert at the restaurant last night, some six days after the actual date. (more…)

An Interview on Hardrock

An Interview on Hardrock

Jul 14, 2011

When it was all said and done, I kissed the Hardrock on Saturday, 31 hours and 55 minutes after starting the morning before, for 9th place. It was the 4th time in as many attempts to do so, yet despite the experience I’ve accumulated through those years,

One more time around

One more time around

Jul 7, 2011

Well, it’s not my lucky number, but it’ll do. It’s time for another lap. Hardrock starts tomorrow at six. It’ll be my 4th time participating, and my 3rd trip in the counter-clockwise direction. That is, the race heads towards Lake City, then over Handies Peak, to Ouray, then Telluride, Ophir, and back to Silverton. Familiar as it has become, like a lot of Colorado, the San Juans are still buried...

Fifty-plus in Lake City

Fifty-plus in Lake City

Jun 23, 2011

Nice work, Christy. If you do this stuff long enough, at some point you’re going to make a wrong turn. That said, I’m sure some watching thought it was cute that Christy and I finished together at the San Juan Solstice 50 miler last Saturday. If they only knew what different days we had out there. Due to excessive snow, an alternate course had to be put together for the...

The Dirty 30

The Dirty 30

Jun 8, 2011

Spring snows and June skiing aside, the summer running season is here. Jumping right into things, Christy and I ran the Dirty 30 last Saturday, a 50K course run along the trails of Golden Gate State Park, located northeast of Blackhawk, CO. Now in its 3rd year, the event hosts three races– a 7, 12, and 31 miler (50K)– and in addition to being really scenic, very hilly and just...

The JFK 50 – for history’s sake

The JFK 50 – for history’s sake

Nov 27, 2010

Christy, Lisa Fichman, Larry Siu and me before the race. The oldest ultra run in the country, the JFK 50 miler, took place last Saturday. Its start dates back to 1963, eleven years before Gordy Ansleigh first ran alongside the horses at the 1974 Tevis Cup, which later evolved into the Western States 100, a race which many people incorrectly believe to be the country’s first ultra. For comparisons sake,...

One thing remains consistent @tedmahon and #alwaysgo 🏃‍♀️❤️🙏 Back in the day, we had no idea what the Six Star Medal even was, but Chicago, Boston, NYC, Berlin, (and others) - seemed like cool places and courses to check out. Then throw in the discovery of trail running and ultramarathons, and it would take a little while to get back to New York again, London, and Tokyo. Feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience all six World Marathon Majors with so many friends and family along the way 💞So much support, laughter, challenges, and inspiration 🙏 And just what I needed right now, people from all over the world 🌍 coming together for one goal and to do their best, showing kindness, encouragement, and resilience at every step. 🙏🏃‍♀️⭐️✔️❤️ #SixStars #goals #WorldMarathonMajors #Grateful #runningcommunity @wmmajors #tokyo #London #NYC #Berlin #chicago #Boston #20thmarathon #25yearsinthemaking
