14er Ski Descents – Castle Peak – October 7, 2004

14er Ski Descents – Castle Peak – October 7, 2004

Oct 7, 2004

It’s amazing what a good day you have up in Montezuma Basin in October. Since Dirk and I were headed out on a climbing trip to Ecuador in a week or so we wanted some time up high. A bluebird day with easy skiing snow greeted us.

14er Ski Descents – Mount Wilson – May 19, 2004

May 19, 2004

Dirk on Mount Wilsons summit, with El Diente behind. Route: North Face Team: Ted, Dirk Bockelmann After descending El Diente, we traversed as far as we could towards Mount Wilson and began climbing. Switching off trail breaking duty in regular intervals, we made pretty good time up the very direct North Face. This peak, like El Diente, warranted another visit. At the top of the snowy north face exists a...

14er Ski Descents – El Diente – May 19, 2004

May 19, 2004

Skiing was easy on the soft, north facing snow. Route: North Face Team: Ted, Dirk Bockelmann After some pretty good days so far this spring (we were just in the Sangres), and with a week remaining before work starts up, I figured I should keep charging. Dirk was free as well, so we decided to head down to the San Juans with the three peaks of the Wilson group in...

14er Ski Descents – Ellingwood Point – May 16, 2004

May 16, 2004

The sun crests the saddle between Blanca and Ellingwood and warms the chill. Route: South Face Team: Christy, Ted After coming off our big push in the Sawatch the weekend prior, we wanted to check out the Sangres. There was enough snow down there still to ski, but it was going fast. We made the drive to towards Alamosa and then up the horrendous Como Lake Road to a reasonable...

14er Ski Descents – Snowmass Mountain – May 20, 2002

May 20, 2002

Jeremy on the summit, shot with a disposable camera. Route: East Face Team: Ted, Jeremy Barbin Snowmass Mountain has always been a favorite. Part of its allure lies in its remoteness, the fact that you can only really see it from other exciting locales. Backpacks, peak climbs and backcountry ski tours bring the mountain into sight, when I see it I must be doing something fun, like a reward for...

14er Ski Descents – Windom Peak – May 7, 2000

14er Ski Descents – Windom Peak – May 7, 2000

May 7, 2000

Route: Widowmaker (NW) Couloir Team: ted, Chris Carmichael, Dave Rhodes If you just came off Sunlight, then Windom naturally follows. Less than 1000 vertical feet and about a half mile away, to get one and not try for the other after getting this far away from home is crazy. For skiers it’s even more sensible, Sunlight’s ski line faces south and Windom’s northwest so it’s a perfect one-two from high...

14er Ski Descents – Sunlight Peak – May 7, 2000

14er Ski Descents – Sunlight Peak – May 7, 2000

May 7, 2000

Route: South Face (Red Couloir) Team: Ted, Chris Carmichael, Dave Rhodes After a great day on Sneffels, it was time to ratchet up the preparation for next months climb/ski attempt on Denali. We decided to head in to Chicago Basin for five days. We drove to Durango on Cinco De Mayo and proceeded to start off the trip with a full on pub crawl. The next morning we crawled onto...

14er Ski Descents – Mount Sneffels – May 1, 2000

14er Ski Descents – Mount Sneffels – May 1, 2000

May 1, 2000

Route: South Face to Lavendar Col Team: Ted, Jann Stoeckl In June, Jann Stoeckl and I were headed to Denali with Aspen friends Sean Shean and Brad Smith. The four of us had the month of May to prep for what would be my biggest trip to date. This seemed to fit as preparation. We drove to Ouray and then up the Camp Bird Mine Road until snow stopped us,...

Smile. There’s lots to be happy about. 😊 Smile. There’s lots to be happy about. 😊
Christmas Day 2008, @nealbeidleman in the Northwoo Christmas Day 2008, @nealbeidleman in the Northwoods of Highland Bowl. There haven’t been many deep snow skiing photos on the old IG lately. Hopefully the weather gods will stop being so stingy and let it snow, so everyone can get back to skiing powder and I can stop going through old pics trying to recall what it looks like!🤞❄️
With a month of rehab behind me, it’s time to st With a month of rehab behind me, it’s time to start looking ahead to skiing again (not there yet). 😊 It helps to have memories from days like this last spring. ❄️❄️❄️#athomeinthemountains #forskiers @kaestleski #tx93 @strafeouterwear
New year, new challenges. It’s been three weeks New year, new challenges. It’s been three weeks since hip replacement surgery, and things are going well. I’m up and about, walking around town, on the stationary bike. No skiing, yet. But it isn’t far off!
⛷😀
I had been managing my deteriorating joint for many years... dealing with increasing pain and a continued loss of my range of motion. It forced me to pull back on some activities, and give up others altogether, like running, which has always been important to me.
🏃🏻👎🏻😢
For years I aggressively explored the so-called “conservative treatments” to get the most out of my existing joint— PT, massage, acupuncture, nutrition, supplements, yoga, etc.— all in an effort to adapt to the worsening condition. But those options aren’t cures, they only buy time. Eventually the loss of cartilage overrules everything else, and that’s when the decision becomes clear.
🏥
So with the procedure behind me and a clear path forward, add me to the list of those who are excited to move past 2020, and tackle the challenges that lie ahead. Cheers to the New Year and all that it may bring. 🌅😊💪🏼
One last limping lap up the hill on the old joint. One last limping lap up the hill on the old joint.
RBG. 🇺🇸 Christy had the honor of meeting her RBG. 🇺🇸 Christy had the honor of meeting her in Aspen a few years ago. When the host of the gathering introduced them to each other, mentioning Christy’s long list of outdoor achievements, RBG, who had grown into an ardent fitness junkie herself, nodded with approval.

You can almost picture the exchange. I always thought it was funny to imagine the two of them together in a fitness class.

Christy looked up to her as we all did. She cared so much about many of the important issues of our day, and she embraced her role as one of the last defenders of those rights in the broken system we find ourselves.

Diagnosed with terminal cancer, she remained in her role until the day she died. She had to, she knew what was at stake. After she passed away a little more than a month ago, her daughter said her last dying wish was not to be replaced until after the election.

We all know the rest of the story. With the dramatic new court alignment, a lot of critical policies that define this country will likely be on the chopping block.

RBG fought for us until her last dying breath and without the firewall she helped provide, it’s the voters who are now the last line of defense.

So if you haven’t voted, make a plan to do so. Now. There’s more on the line in this election than any other in our lives.

Get out and VOTE! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 #election2020 #getoutandvote

Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, @audubonsociety p Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, @audubonsociety proposed a new holiday tradition- a Christmas Bird Census that would count birds during the holidays rather than kill them. Today, birders all over the world, as well as the Roaring Fork Valley, went out to count birds in this same tradition 120 years later. Our small team of two got 28 species on a cold, gray bird day. Interesting that the 1918 report does not mention the Spanish Flu or note any precautions made.
In these dark days, let us look for joy in simple yet powerful ways. ❄️🙏🌲❤️#alwaysbebirding #lettheoutsidein #forestbathing #christmasbirdcount2020
