We skied Castle Peak’s North Couloir last weekend, an early season favorite of mine. 14er ski descents are usually reserved for the spring months, but there are exceptions. Wet weather in Aspen during the autumn months falls as snow in Castle’s Montezuma Basin, and reasonably good skiing can be had up there as early as late September. The North Couloir is a bit more finicky in the early season (more…)
Route: North Face Team: Christy, Ted, Chris Davenport, Scott Rinckenberger If you haven't been tuned into the Centennial Skiers Project, to sum it up quickly I'll say it's been a really good spring. Christy, Dav, and I (along with an assortment of friends) crisscrossed the state, skiing high-13er summits day after day. Not only has it been really productive, but it also rated pretty high on the old fun meter....
It took a little while, but I finally managed to get the trip reports from our 14er ski descents back online.
The poster says it all. See you at Neptune Mountaineering in Boulder next Thursday.
Ski Mount Rainier in a day? Sure, just get an early start.
If you’re in Vail next week for opening day, come by The Sebastian afterwards for Christy’s slideshow. It’s going to be fun. Tickets benefit the Youth Foundation of Vail.
The last ski days of the 2011 spring season in Aspen, including the southwest face of South Maroon and Independence Pass.
Route: Box Creek Cirque Team: Ted, Sean Shean In late spring of 2011, Sean Shean and I skied the Box Creek Cirque on Mount Elbert. This was my final ski day of the 2011 spring season, and the second time I had skied Mount Elbert. By this late in the season, the summer trail is mostly dry. We hiked the route from the South Elbert trailhead in our running shoes,...
Sometimes you just have to play the hand you're dealt. Not that skiing isn't one of my favorite things to do, but after six or seven months of winter, the arrival of summer is definitely welcome. As we all know though, nature doesn't always follow a set schedule and this year's prolonged snowy spring was a good example of that-- summer really didn't seem to declare itself until just a...
Route: Southwest Couloir Team: Ted, Christy, Joey Giampaolo This had been on our list for a while. Climb South Maroon via the East (Y) Couloir to the summit, ski the backside down to Fravert Basin, and then make our way back around to Maroon Lake. In our case we skinned up and over the col to the north, which put us in Upper Snowmass Creek, a.k.a. Lost Remuda, and then...
