Route: Southeast Face to Angel Snowfield
Team: Christy, Ted, Dirk Bockelmann, Phillip Ring
This was a busy few days of 14er skiing. I skied Quandary with my friend Scott Martin, then drove to South Colony Lakes and skinned into camp at the summer trailhead for the night. The next morning, I skied the North Couloir on Crestone Peak with Frank Konsella and Josh from Crested Butte, and afterward, I made it all the way out and to Salida for the night. I met Christy, Dirk, and Phillip at the Angel of Shavano Trailhead the following morning, and in mild storm conditions, we headed up the trail.
It was a wet day. The clouds kept the air temperature warm, so the snow was also very sloppy. But it was fairly well covered, and we could ski right from the summit—that isn’t always a given on Mount Shavano.
It’s a straightforward route up the summer trail, and we skied pretty far down the Angel Snowfield (below the summer trail) and found our way home with a GPS. Afterward, we grabbed dinner in Buena Vista and then headed to the Huron trailhead for the night. If we were successful on Huron, it would be my 4th 14er in as many days.
