1Mountain Mentoring

Mountain Mentoring

Feb 7, 2018

Last year I had the opportunity to be a part of an amazing mentorship program that the Aspen Middle School conducts annually with their 6th-grade students. I was approached by an impressive 11-year old girl who asked if I would be willing to participate in the program as her mentor for ski mountaineering.

Mount Whitney

May 25, 2017

Being a couple of Colorado ski mountaineers we’ve always had a thing for 14ers. There are so many in our backyard it’s hard not to hold a special place for them. So when we arrived to California’s Eastern Sierras, home to some of California’s dozen or so 14,000 foot peaks, it was natural that we […]

3Mount Langley

Mount Langley

May 16, 2017

Our trip to the Sierras started with a ski descent of the Northeast Couloir on Mount Langley, the southernmost 14er in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains.

4Spring Ski Season Wrap-up

Spring Ski Season Wrap-up

Jun 11, 2016

The season is definitely winding down. For most it was over weeks or even months ago. But we always like to keep things going until the very end, and besides, the conditions up high are really just coming into form in May. We may still get out for another day or two before truly stashing […]

5National Geographic Adventurers of the Year

National Geographic Adventurers of the Year

Nov 17, 2015

In the department of good news, we were recently nominated as National Geographic Adventurers of the Year, for our completion of the Centennial Ski Project. It’s a huge honor to be considered for this award, something that National Geographic has been organizing since 2005. Teamwork is everything. What began years ago as three individual pursuits […]

6Mount Raoul

Mount Raoul

Apr 17, 2015

Christy, Joey, and I skied Mount Raoul last weekend, a local summit just west of Castle Peak named in honor of the late Raoul Wille.

7“What It Takes to Climb Every Colorado ‘14er’ in Skis”

“What It Takes to Climb Every Colorado ‘14er’ in Skis”

Mar 19, 2015

We’ll leave it to the Wall Street Journal to ask that question, in a story that ran in Tuesday’s paper about Christy, 14ers, her training, and more. It was a cool story, and considering how often the press misses the mark on topics outside of their expertise, I think they did a really good job.

8Conundrum Couloir

Conundrum Couloir

Oct 9, 2014

Fall just wouldn’t be complete without a trip up to Montezuma Basin. A friend had told me that the recent wet weather was falling as snow up in the basin at 13,000 feet, and that the skiing was actually pretty good. Better yet, the road was still mostly dry and you could drive high up […]

9Climbing and Skiing Colorado’s Mountains – the guidebook

Climbing and Skiing Colorado’s Mountains – the guidebook

Feb 24, 2014

As a Colorado backcountry skier, the mere prospect of spring brings excitement. But I found myself particularly psyched for the upcoming season after poring over a copy of the new guidebook, Climbing and Skiing Colorado’s Mountains – 50 Select Ski Descents. This book is long overdue. It’s co-authored by Ben Conners and Brian Miller, two […]

10Castle Peak

Castle Peak

Nov 15, 2013

We skied Castle Peak’s North Couloir last weekend, an early season favorite of mine. 14er ski descents are usually reserved for the spring months, but there are exceptions. Wet weather in Aspen during the autumn months falls as snow in Castle’s Montezuma Basin, and reasonably good skiing can be had up there as early as […]

About Christy & Ted

Christy and Ted Mahon We met in Aspen in 2000 and have been happily stuck in the rockies ever since, getting out in the mountains every day we can, in every season and by all means possible. Read More

  • Gettin’ buzzed on the Jungfrau summit. 🇨🇭🇨🇭🇨🇭
  • The long, airy ladders to Konkordia Hut. Who would have guessed the aceess to the front door would be more unnerving than navigating whiteout conditions over the glacier to get there. The Aletsch Glacier is receding and the hut has had to build extensive flights of steps up the vertical mountainside to allow guests to access the hut. It’s almost 500 feet up and down an airy metal staircase in ski boots with a single handrail between the hut and the snow! #watchyourstep #berneroberland #eurohuttrip #followthesnow #konkordiahutte
  • Super windy on the 4000+ meter summit of the Hinter Fiescherhorn in the Berner Oberland. Weather was approaching, had to abort an attempt on the Grosses summit. #runforit #stealthesummit #alpsskitouring #followthesnow
  • Jungfrau ✔️what a day, what a place! 🇨🇭 that’s the Monch and Eiger in the distance. #skitouring #berneroberland #followthesnow - ⛷ @aspenchristy #tx98 #forskiers
  • Just in case it wasn’t recognizable I thought I’d include the sign.
  • Better get after it, things may not last very long around these parts.

  • Thank you Swiss Alps for letting us grace your summits and travel safe through your valleys! Had no idea we were visiting a UNESCO World Heritage site before we got here. The Jungfrau-Aletsch Glacier is the largest in the Alps and as deep as 3 stacked Eiffel Tours! Just amazing. We will be back for you Finsteraarhorn! #swissalps #berneseoberland ❤️⛷🇨🇭❄️
  • And there it is, the Konkordia Hut, our home for the night! If this isn’t evidence of climate change and global warming, I don’t know what is. This hut used to be on the glacier....now a crazy amount of airy stairs to get up to.
