We were hoping to get some miles in on a tour that didn’t feel too aggressive considering all the new snow that fell recently. So Sean, Christy, and I put together a pretty fun loop outside of Ashcroft that allowed us to get up high and catch some views, ski a bit, and all while keeping the terrain pretty mellow.
At the start of every new season we like to set some goals, and we'll lay out a checklist of outings and activities we hope to complete. The goals aren't always written down and we might not always get to every one, but we try. Highland Bowl days, backcountry days, ski mountaineering days, rando races, ice climbing, the family ski trip, of course lift-accessed days (100?)— they’re all part of...
We made a trip up to a favorite remote spot for the weekend, to Pierre Lakes high above Snowmass Creek. Many people who have climbed Capitol Peak have peered down to the rocky basin with the alpine lakes and promised themselves they would camp there someday, but the reality is that few actually do. In a neighborhood of giants Belleview Mountain is often overlooked, but it has a really cool couloir right down to West Maroon Creek.
A 20 mile ski outing to Mount Raoul, 13,803 ft, near Castle Peak, with a return trip over Conundrum Peak and down the Conundrum Couloir
They're right in our backyard yet somehow Christy and I had never skied Taylor Peak or Star Peak. It was time. We caught a really good view of the 13,000 foot summits last week on our flight to CB for the Grand Traverse. Armed with a couple of photos and a good idea of the terrain having skied up in the Ashcroft area for so many years, we finally went...
Christy and I completed another Elk Mountains Grand Traverse, our 14th, and 8th time as a coed duo. We just can't stay away. The annual ski race/pilgrimage From Crested Butte to Aspen started at midnight on Friday and sent 215 teams of two on the 40 mile journey. (more…)
After an unusually long stretch of high pressure, it finally snowed. And with the arrival of the storm that broke the six-week sunny pattern, we headed up to a favorite spot.
We're waiting for new snow here, it seems like the East Coast has been rather selfishly hogging it all lately. But even though the backcountry powder conditions may be less-than-fresh, there are still some sunny, scenic touring days to be had. We ventured up Sievers Mountain recently, and apart from some challenging conditions at lower elevations on the approach and the exit, the tour was great-- both the scenery and...
A week of sun and warm temps crusted up the powder in the backcountry, so we thought a different type of ski tour was in order. We grabbed the light skis and made a loop around nearby Mace Peak. (more…)
