National Parks

Wonderland Trail

Wonderland Trail

Sep 25, 2018

Mount Rainier and the 93 mile Wonderland Trail. In 1899 Mount Rainier became the nation’s 5th National Park, a well deserved designation for one of the most iconic mountains of North America. Soon afterwards, work began on a project to construct a trail that circumnavigated the spectacular 14,440 foot summit. Years later, after subsequent refinements and re-routes, the 93 mile Wonderland Trail was created. Now over 100 years old, the...

Salt Creek

Salt Creek

Oct 23, 2017

At the far southern end of the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park is a valley called Salt Creek. The Salt Creek region is full of ancient ruins and petroglyphs unlike other areas of this National Park.

Death Valley

Death Valley

May 21, 2017

When a small storm moved into the Sierras mid-week, bringing wintry conditions to the mountains, we took the opportunity to head back to Death Valley National Park knowing that it would be unseasonably cool.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce Canyon National Park

Nov 1, 2016

Running up one of the forks of the Navajo Loop. We love Bryce Canyon National Park. We just returned from four days of trail running and backpacking there and we were blown away by the beauty. Utah has no shortage of incredible desert scenery, the state has five National Parks to showcase it all. But through the years we had always set our sights on the other members of Utah’s...

Zion – Pine Creek

Zion – Pine Creek

Nov 10, 2015

Clearing weather allowed for a descent of the Pine Creek slot, one of the Zion classics.

Zion – Keyhole Canyon

Zion – Keyhole Canyon

Nov 5, 2015

We arrived with a rainstorm, so we hustled out to the Overlook and watched the waterfalls start up. The fall off-season wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the desert. I recently joined a group of friends on a trip to Zion National Park, a favorite spot in southwest Utah for some slot canyon adventures. If there’s one rule regarding slot canyons, it’s that they should always be avoided when...

Waterpocket Fold & Muley Twist Canyon

Waterpocket Fold & Muley Twist Canyon

Nov 5, 2013

Looking north up the Waterpocket Fold in the morning. As you travel east (right) you pass through younger and younger rock strata. The Waterpocket Fold of Capitol Reef might be best described as a bend in the earth’s crust where subsequent erosion has exposed the underlying rock strata. Whereas the layers of desert rock are normally seen in a canyon wall stacked vertically, the layers of the Fold are tilted...

Capitol Reef

Capitol Reef

Oct 31, 2013

We decided to check out Capitol Reef National Park last weekend. Like many people, we had long known of this National Park in south central Utah but had never spent any actual time there. One of its major attractions is the Waterpocket Fold, a 100 mile long exposed monocline

The Zion Traverse

The Zion Traverse

Nov 11, 2012

Through some of the narrows on the descent from the East Rim to Weeping Rock. We ran the Zion Traverse last week– a linkup of existing trails across Zion National Park that measures about 48 miles and reportedly gains around 10,000 vertical feet. Christy and I are big fans of established courses such as the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim (or roundtrip) and the Four Pass Loop, so it was time to...

Another Rim to Rim to Rim

Another Rim to Rim to Rim

Nov 11, 2011

“Remember: Hiking to the river and back in one day is dangerous and never recommended due to limited shade, extreme heat and a near 5,000 foot elevation change!” – from The Guide- Maps and Information for Grand Canyon National Park, issued to visitors upon arrival. Christy on the snowy descent from the North Rim. Well they got the elevation part right, at least for the South Rim section of the...

It was amazing to spend time with this icon recently. Her message of hope and the inspirational words she shared with the kids in the valley schools were something to admire, 🙏 topped off by the tales she shared over whiskey 🥃 around the fire 🔥 of her decades as a conservationist, scientist, and activist in Africa and worldwide. 🌍🌱🦧🔭

We need more of this in the world today. 🌈

Bravo to @aspenchristy and @acesaspen for bringing her message to the valley. 🙏

"Every single day you live, you make an impact on the planet, and you can choose what sort of impact you make."

An end of an era…. Papa passed peacefully in his An end of an era…. Papa passed peacefully in his sleep this week.
It’s been incredible to reflect on the profound impact he had on our lives. In his 99 + years, we were able to stay so close and share so many special experiences. We will miss his remarkable memory and stories of growing up in Nantucket, flying planes in WWII, living in Japan, finding his way to the mountains of Colorado and skiing until his 90s. Grateful for all the memories we were able to share. We will cherish them forever. 🧡
This week Dr. Jane Goodall came to our valley to s This week Dr. Jane Goodall came to our valley to share her message of hope with the @acesaspen community. It was incredible to see the affect of her stories on students from Glenwood Springs to Aspen. I’m not sure who was more inspired - the educators and adults she touched, or the youth that hung on to her every word.
I do know that this message of hope is needed right now and it was empowering to hear her advice of “just do something”. Be a part of the solution, understand your impact, and take action in your community to ensure a more sustainable future for our planet, people, and animals. #capacityforchange #awareness #environmentaleducation #collaboration #dosomething

This year, I'm honored to be running for the Chris Klug Foundation to help bring awareness to the 104,000 children and adults currently waiting for an organ transplant. I will give it my all out there to raise funds and raise awareness, and would love your help! 100% of all donations made will go towards my $3,500 goal for the Chris Klug Foundation (CKF), and any amount will make a difference. Link to donate in my bio!

Also, remember to double-check that you are registered as an organ donor! An easy way to know if you're on the organ donor registry is to look at your driver's license or state ID card! #donatelife #earnyourheart #makeadifferencetoday
