Route: North Face Couloir
Team: Ted, Dirk Bockelmann
It’s amazing what a good day you have up in Montezuma Basin in October. Since Dirk and I were headed out on a climbing trip to Ecuador in a week or so we wanted some time up high. A bluebird day with easy skiing snow greeted us.
After first skiing a lap in the upper bowl, we followed up with the now-typical “Castle Loop”— up to the Castle/Conundrum saddle, to the summit of Castle Peak, and then down the North Couloir.
Montezuma Basin doesn’t get much better than this.

At the saddle, en route to the summit.

On the summit.

Down in the couloir.

Dirk, on our first lap in the upper basin before heading for the summit.

A five-star day by Montezuma standards.
