For the superstitious skier, it’s usually a bad idea to talk about a snow storm before it arrives. But this ski season so far has been lacking in terms of snow, so whatever steps we’ve taken to keep from jinxing the snowfall hasn’t been effective, and there’s a storm on the way. So I’m going to take the opposite approach and share some powder pics from earlier in the season...
Joey in the Pope Chute. In need of a change of scenery after a hectic holiday stretch in Aspen, we went down to ski Silverton Mountain last weekend. They were a little light on snow, and the temps were frigid (-22F as we drove to the ski area Saturday morning), but Christy, Joey, and I still had a great time. (more…)
The start of the loop course. Photo courtesy of the Aspen Daily News Thanks to everyone involved for getting last nights ski mountaineering (skimo) race off successfully. Donning headlamps and the lightest touring gear they could find, about 30 people, a majority of whom were women, lined up for the 5:30pm start. It was the first of a series of four races to take place at Aspen Highlands this season,...
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
While we’re waiting for the snow to arrive, I wanted to pass along a cool video by Jordan Manley on the sailboat skiing adventures in NW Iceland offered by Borea Adventures. Iceland: A Skier’s Journey EP3 S3 from ARC’TERYX on Vimeo. (more…)
Mikaela Schiffrin, 18 years old and from Colorado, finished in 9th as the top US woman. The seasons have been slow to change and we haven’t been out for too many winter adventures yet. The Women’s World Cup did come through town last weekend, so I thought I’d share some photos from the first day’s giant slalom race, which saw beautiful weather and really good snow. They’re incredibly impressive to...
Through some of the narrows on the descent from the East Rim to Weeping Rock. We ran the Zion Traverse last week– a linkup of existing trails across Zion National Park that measures about 48 miles and reportedly gains around 10,000 vertical feet. Christy and I are big fans of established courses such as the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim (or roundtrip) and the Four Pass Loop, so it was time to...
Mary’s Loop Like a couple of elk forced down to lower elevations by snowfall, Christy and I headed to Fruita to go for a run. Most people associate Fruita with mountain biking. While the biking is nothing short of awesome there, many of the trails work equally well for a run. The rolling, semi-technical Kokopelli trails are the best, since the bikers aren’t moving as fast and as a runner...
The poster says it all. See you at Neptune Mountaineering in Boulder next Thursday.
The results are in from the OnTheSnow.com ski test. Over a few days last March, I was one of 13 lucky people tasked with evaluating next year’s skis for the website’s annual review. I say lucky because I think it’s a really cool opportunity to tryout the new gear, but it wasn’t without it’s challenges. There were 60 different skis that needed reviewing in just three days time, so it...
