Mountain Mentoring

Mountain Mentoring

Feb 7, 2018

Last year I had the opportunity to be a part of an amazing mentorship program that the Aspen Middle School conducts annually with their 6th-grade students. I was approached by an impressive 11-year old girl who asked if I would be willing to participate in the program as her mentor for ski mountaineering.

“What It Takes to Climb Every Colorado ‘14er’ in Skis”

Mar 19, 2015

From the Wall Street Journal, March 17, 2015. We’ll leave it to the Wall Street Journal to ask that question, in a story that ran in Tuesday’s paper about Christy, 14ers, her training, and more. It was a cool story, and considering how often the press misses the mark on topics outside of their expertise, I think they did a really good job. (more…)

When it comes to gear and equipment, we like to use whatever we think is best, and we’ve generally avoided commitments to specific brands so as to have the freedom to do that. But when I was presented an opportunity to be part of a small group of product testers for Outdoor Research, I thought it warranted some additional consideration. Actually, I said yes right away. The reason was simple....

On trail running

On trail running

Jun 13, 2013

The usual trail races are coming up (Lake City, Hardrock) so Christy and I are trying to make the annual rapid transition from skiing to running. It always feels kind of last minute– a recent sprained ankle didn’t help– but while I often complain to myself about the lack of time to get properly prepared, I know deep down I really like it this way. That said, it can be...

Start out slow, then taper

Jun 6, 2009

Well at least that’s my strategy when Christy and I line up at the start for the Steamboat Marathon this Sunday. I don’t have a choice. After a great spring almost entirely dedicated to skiing, and with the approaching calendar stacked with some pretty tough running races– the Bighorn 50 is in two weeks and Hardrock is a few weeks later just to name two– I need to get some...

Well Done Art

Well Done Art

Nov 16, 2008

As part of getting all caught up after our trip, we’ve been chipping away at the Himalayan-like pile of mail that awaited us at home. That means flipping through a glossy ski or climbing magazine faster than Christy can cover a fluffy fashion mag while waiting to check out at the supermarket. So we almost missed the ad. Last June, Art Burrows asked if we’d be interested in taking part...

It’s disappointing to have the spring season trashed by airborne dust and dirt though. 👎 Experts say the continuing drought in the American West is all but ensuring this spring phenomenon will happen with increasing frequency— and even earlier in the season— in the years ahead. 👎 Let’s hope those forecasts are wrong. The spring backcountry season is already short enough. 📷 @aspenchristy
