Wasatch Front 100 – Ted’s take

Wasatch Front 100 – Ted’s take

Sep 11, 2008

The ten second countdown to the start of a 100 mile race is a crash course in coping. I often feel a bit sick to my stomach and while standing there I can’t help but think about what is happening, what kind of mistake I’ve made. How did I get in this situation? Why would anyone voluntarily sign up for this, let alone pay money to participate?  Will I really watch the sun rise twice while...

Sunday was the inaugural running of the Leadville Silver Rush 50 miler. Christy’s first 100 miler is only 6 weeks away (Wasatch Front 100), it sounded like good training.

San Juan Solstice 50 Miler

Jun 24, 2008

So it was a record breaking ski season and snow year in most of Colorado. That’s good, right? Well it was way back in January that Christy, Richard Betts and I made plans to run this race. The mountainous course touches 13,300 ft., has more than 12,000 feet of elevation gain and spends the majority of miles well above 10K(with a huge stretch above 12K). Last June Christy had ideal conditions and a...

These skis bear my name but they’re not mine. Th These skis bear my name but they’re not mine. They’re Ted MacBlane’s.

Ted M. passed away last November after a brief, intense struggle with metastatic prostate cancer. The period of time from diagnosis to life support to his final day was so short that many of his friends, including myself, had no idea there was ever anything wrong. Ted was just suddenly gone one day.

It came as a shock to everyone who knew him. He was too young, it was too sudden.

He and I did a lot together through the years— nordic races, bike rides, tele-skiing at Highlands. We partnered together for several Grand Traverse’s, back in the early days when everyone competed on nordic skis because the light AT skis weren’t around yet.

I learned a lot from him. He just knew so much about training and fitness, endurance, racing— as only someone who dedicated their life to it would. And even though we weren’t partnering much in recent years, I always tried to tap into his wisdom whenever I saw him.

It’s been a few months since his passing and he’s definitely missed.

But in a welcome surprise twist, I’ve been given an additional opportunity to hang out with Ted— Annie thought I should have his nordic skis. After all, they already had my name on them.

So now I get to cruise around the track with my old partner Ted M. It’s been a while since I’ve been classic skiing and my technique could use some work. Maybe Ted’s skis will impart some of his excellent nordic form on me. We’ll see.

Miss you Ted!

How to get your group in trouble at the Icefall Lo How to get your group in trouble at the Icefall Lodge back in 2013-🚨🚔👮‍♂️wait until you think the hut keeper is gone for night and have an apres party with bottomless mojitos on the helipad while you huck yourselves off in a contest to see who can fly the farthest. When the hut keeper returns unexpectedly, face the fact that you were totally busted and he can’t wait for you all to leave. 😆 thanks for the aerial acrobatics @i.n.s.t.a.d.a.n.g and JoeyG and for the drinks @aspenchristy 🍸
